SINISTRIN

>> SINISTRIN - from red squill to renal function diagnosis

Sinistrin is a naturally occurring sugar polymer, polyfructosane, which is isolated from red squill (the bulb of Urginea maritima). It plays an important role in the diagnosis of renal disorders.

Sinistrin, the active ingredient, is obtained in a gentle extraction process, unwanted extracts and colored compounds being removed in a series of purification steps. The solution is carefully concentrated and dried under controlled conditions to yield the solid product.

The polymer is highly soluble in water. It is not metabolized in human blood and passes through the kidneys unchanged by free glomerular filtration. This property renders the molecule an ideal exogenous marker for the determination of the glomerular filtration rate, a measure of the function of the human kidney.

Fresenius Kabi’s sinistrin product is used by nephrologists all over the world. It permits early diagnosis of renal disorders and provision of a targeted treatment, thereby improving the quality of countless patients’ lives.
